Here are a few ways to optimize hardware for maximum battery output.

Turn off ports. Disabling unused ports and components, such as VGA, Ethernet, PCMCIA, USB, and yes, your wireless, too. You can do this through the Device Manager or by configuring a separate hardware profile (see next step).
Create Power-Saving Hardware Profiles. Configure your laptop for the various scenarios in which you use it (on a plane, at the coffee shop, at the office, and so on). You can do this through the Hardware Profiles menu by right-clicking on My Computer and selecting Preferences or by using a freeware utility such as SparkleXP (for Windows XP users).

The easiest way to give your battery an early death is to damage it. And the two most common causes of damage are from overheating and using an AC adapter with the wrong voltage. Use a cooling pad when using a notebook computer on your lap.
Avoid propping your laptop on a pillow, blanket, or other soft surface that can heat up or block cooling fans.
Clean your desk. It sounds strange, but if you have a dusty, dirty desk, that dust will get into the vents and clog the cooling fan. Once the dust is inside your laptop, it is much harder to remove. You can try blasting it out with canned air, but you run the risk of damaging internal components. Try not to store your laptop in a place where the air temperature exceeds 80 degrees Fahrenheit, such as a hot car or an outdoor patio. And if your laptop heats up or is cold, let it return to room temperature before starting up.
Consider taking your battery out when using your laptop plugged into AC power. Just make sure to keep the contacts clean. If you need to clean them, use rubbing alcohol.
For lithium ion batteries, you do not need to discharge them fully and recharge constantly. Since they don't have the same "memory" as older nickel-metal hydride batteries, it is actually better to discharge a lithium ion only partially before recharging. You need to do a full discharge only about every 30 charges.

If you're in the market for a new laptop, there are features and components you should consider to get the most mileage from the system's battery.

An ultra-low-voltage processor, such as the Intel Penryn or one from VIA's line of ULV processors.
A solid-state storage drive, which requires less power and, since there are no spinning parts, will suffer less wear and tear than a traditional hard drive.
An LED display. Although pricey, LEDs use much less power than LCD.

But you can stick to a couple of key guidelines.

Don't skimp on your battery. If you choose the lowest-cost battery you'll probably get a battery that degrades quickly, and you'll end up buying a replacement too soon anyway. So spend the money now to save expense and frustration down the road.

A team of researchers from Rice University and Lockheed Martin have found that silicon nanopores (micron-sized pores on top of silicon wafers) can increase lithium-ion battery capacity by 10 times. Since silicon has the highest theoretical capacity for storing lithium of any material, the discovery could lead to super-long lasting batteries.

The research isn’t unprecedented — earlier this year, MIT researchers found that carbon nanotubes could boost the power of lithium ion batteries by 10 times. The new silicon nanopores, however, are stronger and easier to create. They also last a long time — up to 200-250 charge and discharge cycles.

The silicon nanopore-containing lithium ion batteries are still a long way off, however. But ultimately, the researchers believe that their method could extend the lifespan of batteries used in everything from electric vehicles to laptops.

Ever have an R/C car and you had to buy those $20 battery packs at Radio Shack for them? Well if you take a close look, it's usually just 6 batteries saran-wrapped together with a proprietary plug. According to the Environmental Protection Agency , Americans buy 3 million gadget batteries per year—and the average person tosses more than eight of them. If you’re in a family of gadget fans like my family, you probably use more. At times, I think we consume more batteries than food. But recently, we stopped throwing batteries away.
Instead of buying disposable batteries that can be used only once before disposal, we’re now using rechargeable cells that can be topped off and reused hundreds of times. Every time I recharge them, it means fewer batteries end up sitting in landfills.
This decision wasn’t just a green one. Though there’s a hefty upfront investment for rechargeables, it does make sense economically. With a four-pack of rechargeable AA batteries including the charger selling for around $30, the rechargeable system pays for itself quickly.
You will probably break even after roughly four months of use if you recharge a pair of AAs every week. I don’t know about you, but between remote controls, music players, and flashlights we use much more than that in a week at my house.
But even the rechargeables won’t last forever. Most rechargeable batteries can be renewed somewhere between 300 and 1,000 times, depending on the chemicals used to store the electricity. That amounts to many years of weekly use.
Don’t worry about the effect of the battery charger on your electric bill . Most chargers use just a few watts – less electricity than a child’s night light. Worst case scenario: weekly charging could add up to 13 cents a year to your bill.
That power has to come from somewhere, and in the U.S., chances are that your local power station is burning coal or natural gas to generate the electricity that contributes to global warming. All told, sustainability non-profit organization Cleaner and Greener estimates that amount of power equals about 2 pounds of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere per year. As far as greenhouse gases go, this is much less of a cost to the environment than the dumping of 100 more pairs of disposable AA batteries would be.
Over the past few weeks, I’ve used four sets of rechargeable AA batteries and their chargers (from Energizer, Rayvac, PowerGenix and Sanyo). These are the newest four rechargeable battery models on the market, all released within the last six months. I tested them in every product I could, from a TV remote control, to an alarm clock.
To see how these different brands shape up, I gave each a hard workout that included using a CD player and flashlight. For comparison, I repeated these tests with fresh disposable Duracell batteries (link to testing page).
While disposable AA batteries are rated to supply 1.5 volts, they generally deliver 1.6 volts when new. By contrast, most rechargeable cells create about 1.4 volts when fully charged. That number decreases slowly as the power drains out of the cells, and most devices designed to run on a pair of AA batteries stop working at about 1.2 volts.
There is an exception to that rule in this roundup: PowerGenix’s NiZn cells start out at nearly 1.8 volts, which is good and bad. These batteries lasted the longest, outpacing both disposable and rechargeable cells. But, for some uses they’re too much. They actually managed to burn out two flashlight bulbs after only about 10 minutes of use.
Bottom line: Rechargeables are green, in more ways than one. They can help the environment by preventing the disposal of harmful batteries in landfills, and save you hundreds of dollars a year. If there are compelling reasons not to use the latest rechargeable batteries, we’d like to hear them.

Our 3G throughput test results were very impressive in midtown Manhattan. I was able to download a 5MB ZIP file at 710 Kbps, and the speed tests I conducted in a coffeehouse returned a maximum throughput of 750 Kbps. Dell uses its own wireless utility, a fairly simplistic app that gives Verizon's Access Manager a run for its money. But it is not a complete wireless management utility like Lenovo's Access Connections, which lets you manage your Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, EV-DO, and wired connections in one user-friendly interface and switch easily between profiles.

The D820 has a basic set of management utilities and a fingerprint reader, which ties into the Trusted Platform Module (TPM) hardware solution. Both are managed by Wave's Embassy Security Center, along with Wave's long list of security settings. The suite is challenging to use and set up at times, and separate downloads are required for extensions to the suite. Unlike Lenovo and HP, Dell doesn't provide built-in backup software, but you can download Altiris's backup solution for free.

The D820 includes a hardware switch that enables the Wi-Fi catcher. It detects open wireless access points even when the system is shut down. A green LED indicates that a security-disabled Wi-Fi connection is available, so you don't waste your time turning on the system.

Otherwise, the system comes with basic connectivity ports, including four USB ports, a FireWire port, and a serial port. It also has a PC Card slot, Express Card slot, and a Smart Card reader. Unlike the HP nc6320, it doesn't have a multimedia card reader, but I don't judge it harshly for that, since it is primarily a business notebook. The system has a basic DVD/CD-RW combo drive instead of a dual-layer DVD±RW drive, which is standard these days. If you want to back up files using DVDs, you'll have to upgrade to a DVD burner ($55). You also get a spare replacement Dell latitude d820 battery with cheap price.

Lenovo ThinkPad T61: A Modern Classic Notebook

Though Lenovo ThinkPad T61 may not please lovers of the classic style, the modern notebook market is ruled by quite different trends now. Even such ultra-conservative products as ThinkPad have to change with the times.

It's a solid laptop that weighs in at 2.3kg with dimensions of 335.5mm x 237mm x 27.6mm. That's pretty much what you'd expect for a laptop with a 14.1-inch screen and, as you cast your eye over the T61, you'll find that it is reassuringly familiar. You get both a TrackPoint and a touchpad, the keyboard feels superb, just as you'd expect with a ThinkPad, and there are three mouse buttons.

You can select a T61 from an enormous list of CPU, memory, processor and graphics with different prices. The weakest part of this laptop is the screen, which looks absolutely fine when you view it square-on but the viewing angle is nothing to write home about. The ports and connections are relatively limited and consist of PC Card and ExpressCard slots, three USB ports, VGA output and a mini Firewire port.

Performance is as good as you'd expect from a Core 2 laptop, but battery life is less wonderful and gives the equivalent of three hours of regular use. Maybe you should prepare a spare battery when you order the Lenovo ThinkPad T61 laptop.

Can i install XP on the DELL XPS M1530 Laptop? (end)

In the last blog, i introduced some steps about install Windows XP on Dell XPS M1530. (Source Link).

Now i continue to do it in this blog.

When you are ready to wipe the hard drive and install Windows XP, AFTER having saved the drivers somewhere off of the laptop hard drive you will put the cd in and reboot the computer. On the first screen that pops up that has the Dell logo on it, you will need to hit f12 a few times. As soon as it beeps you know it accepted your input. This will bring you to a screen that lets you choose what to boot from. Choose 'boot from cd/dvd'.

After a few minutes of loading you will eventually get to a screen that displays your currently connected drives, this will be waiting for you to input which partition will contain your operating system. There will probably be multiple drives on this screen due to dell installing recovery and media direct partitions, but these are only partitions on your hard drive. To be honest, I really dont use media direct or the recovery partition so I delete them ( by highlighting them with the arrow keys then pressing 'd' then 'L') I leave the choice to you whether you want to keep these two partitions or not. Onward.

Personally, I would recommend having at least two partitions on your hard drive, one for the operating system and one to store files. I like having a separate partition for storage because I can reinstall the operating system without worry of losing files. If you dont want to worry about separate partitions then select the unpartitioned space with the up/down arrows and hit enter twice and skip the next paragraph.(for those who do not know, a partition will simply look like a second hard drive in windows but will be completely independent from other partitions on the same drive)

To make a new partition you need to hit 'd' to delete the C: partition then 'L' to confirm deletion ( do this for all partitions that you do not want). afterwards it will bring you back to the previous menu which will contain unpartitioned space. To create a new partition you highlight the unpartitioned space (arrow keys) then press 'c' and choose a size for it. For an operating system partition you are usually safe with 20000-30000 megabytes. Personally its been a long time since I've had a Windows XP OS take up more than 25000 megs but you can choose however much you wish. Select the unpartitoned space again then hit 'c' and enter to create the other partition with the remaining space.

Now all that is left is to install Windows XP is select the C: partition then hit enter. Choose format method. (go with NTFS, not FAT32) The quick format will take less than 30 seconds while the other NTFS format will take between 5-10 minutes. To understand the difference between a quick format and the normal format, think of your hard drive like a book. Quick format just erases the table of contents in the book while a normal format will erase all of the pages as well. Either choice will work exactly the same, but if you are worried about security of the information previously stored on the drive then you should opt for the normal, slower format.

After choosing format method the computer will copy the setup files and go through with the Windows installation. From here on out everything is relatively straight forward with the setup process. After the setup is complete the computer should boot up into Windows XP and all that is remaining is to install all of the drivers from the zip files that you saved before erasing your drive. (right click and extract them to the same folder before trying to run them)

Afterward, if you want to check if you've got the hardware installed correctly, you can right click on 'my computer' then click 'manage'. Select device manager in the left frame and anything that has a yellow exclamation next to it is not functioning. If something is not functioning you should try reinstalling the driver for it.

More and more people had bought the Dell XPS M1530. As far as we know, the pre-installed OS of the laptop is Vista. But some people don't like the Vista. So there is a question: can i install XP on the DELL XPS M1530 Laptop?

The answer is '' Yes, you can. '' But how to ? This entire process is a lot less complicated than it looks! So i would separate as some parts.

Now, put in your Windows XP disc and copy the entire contents of the cd to a folder on your desktop (name it 'XP')

Run the nLite program. Click next until you get to a page that asks you to point to the location containing Windows XP install files. Now you point it to the 'XP' folder you just created on your desktop.

Click next until you see a screen with about 7 or 8 long rectangular buttons on it. One of the buttons will be named 'drivers' and at the bottom one should be named 'bootable iso'. Click them to select them then click next.(note: You can mess with the unattended install and tweaks settings as well, however, that it outside of the scope of this guide and I will not cover them in detail. If you do not know what you are doing I would suggest just leaving them alone for now and go back and play with them later)

Hitting next after this page should take you to the drivers page which will let you add drivers to the Windows XP install. Now we get to add the SATA matrix drivers to the installation. You need to run the executable file that you downloaded. this will let you extract the drivers to a folder. make sure you either make a note of where this folder is located, or make a new folder on your desktop and when prompted, changed the extraction point to this folder)

Back in nLite on the drivers page there should be a button in the bottom right corner labeled 'import'. Click it and select 'insert single driver'. Navigate to the folder containing the extracted files. Search for the sata drivers folder. Once found, you will be given a list of all the drivers in that were in that folder and you need to select a specific one. The one you are looking for is near the bottom. You need the one that has ICH8M (which is ICH8mobile) and it also must say SATA DRIVER before it and not RAID DRIVER. (or the ahci driver if you downloaded the complete package from Udi) If you want to play it safe you can include all of the drivers without doing any damage by just selecting the first one the shift clicking on the last one which should select them all then click ok or whatever button is on that screen to accept the selection.

You will see a driver pop up in the white part of the screen on the drivers page. Clicking next will bring you to a screen that will ask you to start the process (this is assuming that you haven't checked any of the other options on the main menu, if you did then go through them until you get to the page asking you to start the process) This process will repack the .cab (cabinet) with the new drivers and settings.

Afterwards, click next which will bring you to a screen that will let you burn the changes to a bootable Windows XP cd. In order to burn it to CD you need to select 'direct burn' in the top left selection box. Towards the bottom right corner there is a 'burn now' button which will start the burning process, so pop in a cd and click the burn now button and you will shortly have a bootable Windows XP cd with SATA drivers on it.

Before you boot from cd you'll want to save the two zip files that you downloaded containing all of the hardware drivers for Windows XP. You can write them to cd, store them on an external hard drive or thumb drive, or do whatever you have to do in order to have a copy of them because you will be wiping this hard drive very shortly.
